Amirtha Sarovar
On the instructions of Sri Guru Amar Das Ji (3rd Sikh Guru), Sri Guru Ram Das Ji (4th Sikh Guru) started digging the Amirtha Sarovar (sacred tank) of Sri Harmandir Sahib in 1577 AD and later it was brick-lined by Sri Guru Arjan Dev G (5th Sikh Guru) On December 15, 1588.
He also started the construction of Sri Harmandir Sahib. Sri Guru Granth Sahib (Veda of the Sikhs), after its compilation, was first established at Sri Harmandir Sahib on August 16, 1604. Baba Budha Ji, a devout Sikh, was appointed its first high priest.
Golden Temple Amritsar History
Harmandir Sahib means the temple of God. In 1577, Guru Ram Das, the fourth Guru of the Sikhs, dug a pond called Amritsar (meaning “Immortal Honey Pool”) and later gave the same name to the city that grew around it.
Sri Harmandir Sahib means “House of God”, built in the middle of this tank. And it became the supreme center of the Sikhs. In its sanctum sanctorum is the Adi Granth, a collection of songs by Sikh Gurus and Sikh philosophers, Baba Farid and Kabir. The collection of Adi Granth was started by Guru Arjan, the fifth Guru of the Sikhs.
Construction of Harmandir Sahib
The first floor of the gurudwara, originally built in 1574, was surrounded by a small lake in a dense forest. Akbar, the Mughal emperor who came to the nearby area of Goindawal, was inspired by the way of life of the third Sikh Guru, Guru Amar Das and gave him Zakir (land and income of many villages). Guru Ram Das expanded the lake and built a small residence around it.
Some Harmandir Sahib architectural features were aimed at identifying the worldview of the Sikhs. Usually the gurudwara is built on the high ground. However, this golden temple was built at a lower elevation than the surrounding land. Devotees have to go down the steps to enter it. And instead of one entrance Sri Harmandir Sahib has four entrances.
Celebrations
One of the most important festivals is Vaisakhi, which is celebrated in the second week of April (usually on the 13th). Guru Tegh Bahadur Sacrifice Day is also celebrated on other important Sikh religious days such as the birth of Guru Nanak.
Similarly, the festival of Bandi Sore Diwas is celebrated with beautiful lights and fireworks.
